Immigrant Accompaniment Skill-Share & Directory

Immigrant Justice Accompaniment Skill-Share Network
This space was convened by the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee (UUSC) to bring on-the-ground leaders and volunteers together to share learnings, resources, trends, and collaboration opportunities in accompaniment work such as asylum-seeker sponsorship and other welcoming efforts, campaigns to stop deportations, advocacy for releases from detention, and solidarity with people inside immigration detention. It began meeting monthly in February 2020, and now meets quarterly in January, April, July, and October. The network includes groups that are totally volunteer run as well as ones with staff and affiliated with larger organizations, and on the whole represents a people-driven, grassroots effort.

The 42-page Understanding Solidarity Toolkit is designed to support you in building brave spaces and encourage dialogue that acknowledges our identities, privileges, and oppressions in our work towards shaping collective liberation.

The packet includes readings, activities, discussion questions, and other helpful material that will:

  • Help folks dive deeper into their identities
  • Build self-awareness to be in effective accompaniment
  • Examine legacies of systemic injustice, like white supremacy
  • Develop the capacity to be an ally and accomplice
  • Utilize sustaining spiritual practices

If you would like help with designing or hosting a workshop based on materials within the toolkit, email info@uucsj.org.

Building Connections Regionally Call – April 2021

Call date: April 15, 2021

A year into the pandemic and 3 months into the Biden administration there is much that we have learned. Since the work we are doing now looks different than before the pandemic, this was a call for us to check-in with each other and have conversations by regions about what is working now. A list of small victories was shared at the end.

Leadership and Mutual Aid Among Formerly Detained Members: March 2021

Call date: March 18, 2021

The leadership and mutual aid skill-share was focused on the ways formerly detained members support each other and those still detained. We heard from people who are a part of  mutual aid projects of the Boston Immigration Justice Accompaniment Network (BIJAN) and the Queer Detainee Empowerment Project(QDEP). In sharing their experience they gave us ideas on how to organize our own local networks in ways that cultivate and create opportunities for leadership among members directly impacted by detention.

Understanding Solidarity: Tools to Get Your Team Practicing Solidarity – February 2021

Call date: February 11, 2021

At this skill-share we presented and discussed a comprehensive toolkit of resources and activities for facilitating workshops and conversations on privilege, solidarity, and spiritual grounding, for accompaniment volunteer groups. We acknowledge that the resources and activities in the toolkit are geared towards conversations among allies, and they are currently all in English. We think a parallel toolkit can be built for Spanish speaking audiences needing to dive deeper into the same topics, and others more pertinent to their experiences.

Storytelling: Using Stories for Advocacy & Education + Ethical Issues – December 2020

Call date: December 3, 2020

For this skill-share we had two presentations on story sharing focused on the advocacy and education realms. One presentation by the Center for Story-based Strategy focused on the use of a participatory approach that links movement building with an analysis of narrative power and places storytelling at the center of social change. The other presentation from Storycenter discussed the tools that support self-expression, creative practice, and community building. Both organizations have opportunities for full workshops.

Election Debrief – November 2020

Call date: November 2020

In the midst of another election where Trump could win, we felt a strong pull to hold the space of the skill-share to be with each other and process the election results. We asked Mijente, a trusted Latinx justice and self-determination organization, to help us to frame the discussion. They shared their post-election analysis and helped us stay grounded for what might be positive and what work we need to do under the new presidency.

Black Immigrants/ Black Lives Matter Solidarity from Accompaniment Networks – June 2020

Call date: June 11, 2020

As the world reacts with outrage to the murder of George Floyd and people take to the streets all over the U.S. in support of the Black Lives Matter movement, we look both at the particular challenges faced by Black migrants and at the ways local immigrant justice groups can and do partner with and support the Black Lives Matter movement. Guerline Jozef of the Haitian Bridge Alliance presented and helped lead the conversation.

Unfortunately we do not have a recording, only Call Notes.

We recommend watching this webinar featuring Guerline Jozef of Haitian Bridge Alliance as an alternative:

Building Unity in the Mass Incarceration Crisis, Centering Black Migrant Experiences in the Fight for Abolition by UndocuAllies at Harvard, featuring one of our skill-share members, Guerline Jozef, President of the Haitian Bridge Alliance: Webinar Recording

  3. Challenges around host homes and quarantine/ stay-at-home orders
  4. Safety nets for undocumented communities and asylum seekers (through job loss, etc.)

Call date: March 12, 2020

On this call we heard from Dr. Adobe Iheduru from the Center for Victims of Torture in Georgia, who shared the ways that trauma impacts the brain, behaviors, and relationships. We discussed how accompaniment volunteers and hosts might view and respond differently to common situations if seeing things through a trauma lens, and how to be careful to avoid re-traumatization.

Sponsorship and Host Homes – February 2020

Call date: February 6, 2020

On this first call for our network, the group discussed some of the biggest challenges arising in sponsorship and host homes for arriving asylum-seekers, and shared how we are all handling them. Sadly, the recording of this call was lost – the handout and discussion questions are what remain.
