SimpleGifts: Unitarian Centre for Social Action

London, England, UK
With Unitarian values at its heart, SimpleGifts aims to improve the lives of East London residents with programming to increase social cohesion and decrease the effects of poverty.

Internship Description

Internship roles would include assisting with current community programming on two streams – children/families and interfaith outreach. There would be scope for interns to plan and execute a special community event or short pilot project, depending on skills and interests.

  • Specific Skills Needed: Social media skills (posting to Facebook, Twitter, etc, updating website)

Because this placement works with children, selected interns will be required to complete a CORI background check. Candidates should also be open to working and living in a center-city environment within a Muslim-majority community.

  • Number of Intern Placements: 2
  • Internship Time Frame: June 19-July 28, 2017
Know BEFORE You Apply
SimpleGifts provides housing in a homestay with a local Unitarian family.

Public transportation is best for getting around the city. The selected interns are responsible for travel to and from London, England, and any associated costs (e.g. passport and visa fees).
Interns are eligible for a stipend of no more than $1,500 from UUCSJ to assist with food, local public transit, and incidentals, depending on a variety of factors. Applicants are encouraged to seek other sources of funding, including grants from colleges and foundations, congregational support, and Faithify, or other crowd sourcing fundraisers.

SimpleGifts operates in a very multi-cultural area, with a large percentage of Muslim service users and volunteers. Interns would be expected to be respectful of the Muslim culture (although this does not have an overly significant impact on how they deliver programmes).
